THIRTY

KAISERA

I wake up yet again with someone else's body thrown over mine. At least this time, it is someone I know. Elena lays with her mouth open, snoring loudly, a little too close to my ear, one arm and one leg wrapped around me like I am her own personal body pillow.

We spent the night eating, drinking, and planning. I told her about the letter I had both received and sent to the queen, and about how the longer I’m here, the more I’m considering fighting to take back my crown.

I found myself longing for Bax to come back. I am having a tough time getting him out of my mind at all.

Before I knew it, Elena and I had forgotten about everything else and ended up drunk off our asses, laughing the night away until we finally passed out. She must have wrapped herself around me in the middle of the night. She has always been a bit of a wild sleeper. There were several occasions throughout the years in Erathina where we would stay up after work drinking until we passed out together.

I shove her off me, and she rolls over, drool hanging out the side of her mouth and a loud growl leaving her lips as she mumbles something inaudible.

I walk to the bathroom to take care of my morning needs. I start to leave the bathing room and catch sight of myself in the mirror.

What are you getting yourself into?

I stand there, staring and wondering about all the things that have happened in the past three days. The Hollow attacks need to be stopped, and I need to find out what happened to my father. I need to get my strength back. The last attack left me weakened too quickly. I have felt this urge to train and to be better after watching the girl from the brothel have her soul sucked out. I have never taken training seriously, but I think it may be time that I do. I feel this tension in the air that things are coming, and I need to be ready.

I grin at myself in the mirror because I think I know the perfect person to train me: a certain major who I am sure has trained hundreds, if not thousands, of soldiers in his years.

I turn and tiptoe back out the bedroom, careful not to wake Elena as I make my way to the door. When I open the door, the two same guards from yesterday are still there, or maybe they are back. I am not sure if the guards I saw at the door last night are the same ones standing in front of me now.

They turn to me. The one with the horns and lower fangs speaks first. “Need something, Princess?”

“Yes. Can you have Major Tribax come to me? That is, unless I can go to him?”

I go to take a step out of the doorway, but my path is blocked yet again. I have been stuck in this room for nearly two full days.
